I'm looking for a decent air filter/cone for my subaru legacy 2.5gx awd, I don't want to spend to much money .
I've been told these filters help the engine breath easier therefore help with mpg ?
This is what i want as my car drinks the fuel like crazy, could you advise on any other fuel saving tips ?
An air filter wouldn't make you save fuel. However being a subaru owner myself, i would strongly advise that you have your battery cables disconnected at least 30 minutes before installing the filter, as the airflow will change since the air coming inside the filter will be more denser...your MAF (Mass Air Flow) needs to re-adapt...so do consider this...otherwise you ECU will keep pulling your ignition timing all the time...and then you get the dreaded CHECK ENGINE LIGHT...

actually, a cone filter may help to bring down the fc... it allows the engine to take in more air and which means better combustion... not only more oxygen, but cooler air also.. coz in the stock filter, the filter is placed in somekind of air box(the plastic box) and the air in this box have been in the system for some time before it is used by the enine. during this time, the air heats up and therefore become less dense... less dense air means less oxygen... less oxygen means less expansion in the combustion chambers.. cooler air is denser and contains more oxygen (oxygen is what is needed for combustion)
that is why we call these Cold Air Intakes... they take the cold and dense air from a cooler area (sometimes under the car where it may get lot of fresh air) and this air gets "directly" to the engine... in french, [kit d'admission directe]
so it may help bring the fc down...
