16V convert

Hello,

I am wishing to convert a 1.8Lt 8V engine into a 1.8Lt 16V or 20V engine. I wish to change the cylinder head. Has anyone done this before? can u suggest where i can get parts and which mech i can consult best. Also if u can give any guidance about how to go about doing the conversion.

The engine i wish to convert is a VW mk2 Gti Carb engine.

I know i have been reading about it over many websites. What i have come to understand is that is i can find the block, and distributer setup with rotors from a engine of the same era it would not be very complicated. But i really want to do this. This would be the last part of the puzzel on my resto. I presume if i can make my car a 16V then it will totally kick ass.... haha. actually i found a head in london for 50pounds but the guy will not post to mauritius.

even if i get the 16V head with the injection attached i can buy both and then convert the car from carb into the Kjet which came orginally with the the MK2 GTI. please look into this for me. I have to do this, it will be the life of the car i am trying to make. And really the Mk1 i have is very rare it is a 2 door series one orginally from germany. it was among the very few carb GTi which came out. I really want it to be have the fame it had once.

Why not try and get a complete secondhand gti 1.8 efi engine from South Africa. It should a straight bolt on affair and could be cheaper and more reliable.

BTW, why not just supercharge it ;)...less work and more reliable in the long for this engine.

the job conversion wouldn't be that difficult if you have the right tools, diy knowledge, a good guide and all the parts. However, as you said, parts won't be easy to get in Mru, if ever you are doing it.

Just think of this: you are doing the conversion and you need a gasket that is missing. How long before you get it ordered abroad, get it delviered and fit it?

Hey people,

really thanks for the advise. have spent my day finding a 1.8lt mk2 gti engine. AND have been able to find one. Also have been able to find a 2lt passat block which would fit the 1.8lt engine i have. so now i have two options or actually three options. 1 buy the mk2 engine and bolt on, 2 buy the 2lt block and mod the old engine and 3 just leave things original as they are and just bolt the 1.8 lt with my double carb and run the car (this being the cheapest option). What would you do?

I really wish to take the 1.8lt carb engine, get the 2lt block fix the two together, run for a year and then have our english friend K BEEMERZZ find me a 16V head so i can bolt that on to the band vagon in the end... see dreams are big.... hahaha

would love your suggestion please.

thank you for the generosity. i would be highly obliged if u could bring the head for me. Till when would have to have the head dilivered to you or would you be able to find one for me? please tell me about the cost.

I really dont have a big understanding of supercharges, please could you explain and if u have any idea how i would be able to find one.
